For Children

We love the little rascals - we have one of them ourselves, Josh. We believe that it is very important for society that we give our offspring a happy childhood. Judging by our experience since we started in the holiday cottage business in 1997, your children will have a very happy holiday at Cwmiar farm holiday cottages.

Cwmiar is a real working farm - it's not a show. Our speciality is to provide happy and memorable holidays to families with children of all ages.

Your children can be involved in everyday farm life without a journey from your cottage to the farm. You live in one of our luxury cotages in the heart of the farm around the courtyard.

We invite everyone to join in our daily work, if they would like to. We meet in the yard at about 9 o'clock (all the cottages are around the farm-yard) to feed ducks, chickens, sheep and lambs; everyone is welcome to join in and every child is given a pot - and parent if they wish - to put the feed in.

We begin with the ducks; children find it very amusing to see the ducks run out of their house into the pond - we spend some time discussing things relating to ducks, it's amazing how many questions children throw at us.

After feeding the wild birds we proceed to the small field - about 20 yards away - to feed the sheep and lambs - we make a point of encouraging children to feed the animals themselves. The sheep and lambs push and shove to get to the feed and the children find it hilarious.

Then we have another little discussion about sheep before we go further up to let the chickens out of their shed and feed them; here the children learn the difference between feeding sheep and chickens - they learn how to approach chickens if they want to stroke them and they start to learn the proper relationship between animals and humans, which they pick up very quickly and will no doubt be projected on their life in the future. They also learn about the cycle of the egg and the chicken whilst looking for eggs.

Then anyone who wants to, can come to the stables to see horses, cats and dogs (we realize that some children are afraid of dogs but ours are 100% safe and very children friendly; quite often we've had a boy or girl who was afraid of dogs when they arrived, but after a few days they were stroking and even playing with them).

We take the horses to their field - a hundred yards away - the dogs come too, and everyone is invited to come along; children can play in the stream with the dogs and have a jolly good time.

Our beautiful Welsh Black cattle are inspected at least once every day - several times during calving - and again if anyone would like to come and see them, they are very welcome. Some will enjoy being stroked, and our bull is a darling, you can stroke him too if you like.
